Twirl Radio Playlist – Show #863 – 2/23/2019: Cole Guerra of I Am Casting interview!

Cole Guerra of I Am Casting

On this week’s show, we met North Carolina-based Cole Guerra. He’s the main man behind I Am Casting, a jazzy project, which is the perfect combination of experimental, floating melodies and pointed, topical lyrics. After more than a decade off from making music, Cole, a psychologist, returned to the studio. Interestingly enough, he creates the music first–the melodies, and all instrumentation. Only after that does he start writing lyrics. They’re political, timely, and usually subtle enough to where you need to listen a couple of times, and then they start getting under your skin. The whole album was carefully crafted, and quite listenable, while making you think. Check it out at www.iamcastingmusic.com.

We also dug into the new 2019 music. It’s starting to come in, fast and furious, and I am gleefully gulping from this musical firehose. Enjoy the show, and you’ll hear what I mean.

Twirl Radio Playlist – Show #862 – 2/16/2019: In-studio interviews with Gail George, and with Eric Blakely of The Bottle Kids!

Eric Blakely, DJ Mike (and his freakishly long arm), and Gail George just after the Twirl broadcast

Radio magic. It happened this weekend. I was fortunate to have two amazing, wonderful, friendly musical guests visiting me in person, in the Twirl studios. They both traveled a long way to get here, so it was one of those days where all musical roads lead to Sacramento.

Sacramento native, singer-songwriter Gail George, was visiting from New York City. It’s become a regular thing for her to visit whenever she’s in town. She recently released a wonderful set of vocal-oriented cover songs called “It’s Personal”, so we chatted about the making of that, and played some other songs from her past–and even her future–by way of a soon to be released collaboration with Don Hawkins. http://www.gailgeorge.com

Berkeley native, and leader of The Bottle Kids, Eric Blakely, got married a while back and moved to Paris, France. Pretty romantic. Well, he was back in NorCal for a visit, and was kind enough to make the drive up to Sacramento. Last year, he released the Kids’ sophomore release, “Let Me In On This Action”, so we heard some tracks from it, talked about the history of the band, and Eric even graced us by playing a couple of songs live in studio. http://www.thebottlekids.com/

The best part for me was that Gail and Eric had never met before, and weren’t even familiar with each other’s music. But the three of us had a terrific chat. It was a great musical meeting of the minds between these two talents, and you can hear it all here.

Twirl Radio Playlist – Show #861 – 2/9/2019

No guest today, but please enjoy this gratituous picture of my red sneaker in the Twirl studios.

You know, 2019 started off with a bang. Weeks of live radio interviews, and then last week, the Twirlie Awards show, with all of its attendant hoopla. So I thought this week might be an opporunity to play catch up. The music waits for no one–new releases have been coming in nearly every day, and 2019 shows no sign of slowing down.

Big Stir Records has started a program of releasing double digital singles from bands. Really great bands, and really great songs. So I started each half hour segment with one of those singles. Music from Addison Love, Sons of Morning, Clifford Ulrich, and Plasticsoul. Plus–new songs from Lannie Flowers, and Rogers & Butler, ended up in the mix.

It was great getting back to my roots: sitting in a little booth for two hours, talking to myself. Hopefully, you were listening, or will listen to the audio, so that it wasn’t all for naught.

Enjoy the show!

Happening today: The 2019 Twirlie Awards!

Mike wearing the legendary tuxedo T-shirt--worn only once a year, at the Twirlie Awards!

Mike wearing the legendary tuxedo T-shirt–worn only once a year, at the Twirlie Awards!

We are in what the entertainment press refers to as “the run up to the Twirlies”! That is, if the entertainment press were to cover this fine independent music awards presentation.

As it turns out, the eleventh annual Twirlie Awards happens today: Saturday, February 2nd, 2019, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Pacific time, at KUBU 96.5 FM, Sacramento’s voice, and http://www.twirlradio.com. We’ll be broadcasting live from the red carpet. Or at least from a room that has carpet in it.

Hosts Marty Anaya and Mike Lidskin will be presenting such coveted awards as Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Male and Female Vocalists of the Year, and many others. We will be ripping open hermetically-sealed awards envelopes, and revealing the top albums and songs lists, for work released in 2018 and played on Twirl Radio. We’ll have the well-loved red carpet interviews that Marty is known for. You simply cannot afford to miss this epic show. In fact, we will be taking attendance, so you’ll want to listen to every minute of it!

And this year, there’s a new twist. Although we will be giving out the Song of the Year Award on today’s show, we will be revealing–and playing every song from–the entire list on Woody Radio on Tuesday, February 5th, starting at 8:00 p.m. Pacific at www.woodyradio.com. This important group of songs deserves its own show.

In all seriousness, we are glad to honor the great musicians who give Twirl Radio its reason for being. Hope to see you there!
