Twirl Radio Playlist – Show #828 – 6/2/2018: Interview doubleheader Lannie Flowers and Byron Isaacs!

Lannie Flowers

For the second week in a row, I had the pleasure of doing two interviews on the show. It was a real treat–both are great artists. I’ve known one for years, and the other, I met for the first time just today.

Lannie Flowers has been a staple of my radio shows since his 2010 album Circles came out. We used to joke that he wasn’t part of the North Texas power pop scene–he WAS the North Texas power pop scene! His fan base runs far and wide, and his hook laden songs catch everybody’s ear instantly. I’ve seen him play on both the west coast and in Texas, in both his band and the longtime band The Pengwins. For the past four months, he’s been releasing one free single download each month, on Spyderpop Records. And at the end of each month, the old single gets taken down, to be replaced with a new one. None of these songs will be on his forthcoming album, “Home”, due to be released in Fall, 2018–so this makes them exceedingly rare. You’ll really want to get over to the Spyderpop website and download the current track each month. They’ve all been excellent, arguably some of the finest songs of Lannie’s career. And while you’re there, do catch up on the rest of Lannie’s catalog, as well as albums from Bill Lloyd, Chris Church, Danny Wilkerson, The Pengwins, and the Elvis Costello charity tribute album, “Beyond Belief”. We had a fun and spirited chat today, and heard a couple of the new singles. http://spyderpop.com/

Byron Isaacs

In the second hour, we meet rock-Americana singer-songwriter Byron Isaacs. Byron is a bass player, based in Brooklyn, NYC. He’s had a fairly illustrious career as a founding member of Americana band Ollabelle. He’s also been part of Levon Helm’s band (and played on his two Grammy award winning albums), part of The Lumineers, and played with Joan Baez, Larry Campbell, and many others. So after two years on the road with The Lumineers, he found a little time to record his first solo album, “Disappearing Man”. It’s due out on June 12th, and it is nothing short of amazing. When a guy cites his musical influences as The Beatles, Metallica, Charles Mingus, The Band, and various punk bands, you know his first solo record is going to be nothing short of amazing–and Disappearing Man does not disappoint. It’s a wonderful collection of 9 songs. His CD release show will be on that June 12th release date at City Winery in New York, and if you can’t be there, at least make the effort to get the record. byronisaacs.com

Besides Lannie and Byron, we found time to play 10+ brand new tracks from 2018. The musical feast that is 2018 continues unabated. Enjoy the show!
